Play Based Learning
Our Year 1-3 students do some of their learning through an approach called Play Based Learning. This is an approach where students learning is play based. Teachers plan for the skills and attributes to be developed and set up activities and ideas for the children to explore. Year 1-3 students do this together across the Te Pōkai Weka team. During this time groups of students are also withdrawn for their literacy learning.
It is a lot of fun for the students to arrive and move into their play based learning approach. This also supports them to transition from home to school successfully (which is particularly important for New Entrant students).
Play based learning is an approach which is well backed by research as a successful learning approach. It supports Oral, reading and written language growth in particular, along with all other areas of the curriculum.
